George School students and Miracle League athletes got to know each other at the school’s first Miracle League Softball Dance on Friday, January 14. The dance is one of several projects developed by George School and the Miracle League of Northampton Township, an organization that provides opportunities for individuals with mental and physical disabilities to participate in sports.
The print edition of
The Advance of Bucks County featured the event, highlighting the work of George School students Paul Kim ’11, Dan Kolbman ’11, Kevin Simone ’11, and Amanda Walters ’12, who organized the dance as part of their service projects with the Miracle League.
“The dance is just a small piece of the partnership between George School and the league,” reported Petra Chesner Schlatter of the
Advance in an article entitled “At George School, Students Are Making Miracles Happen.” George School’s work with the Miracle League also includes a softball clinic, newly established service projects for George School students, and involvement in a softball tournament scheduled for June.
The dance was part of George School’s Unity Weekend, a four-day
commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. During the weekend, student activities explored Dr. King’s message of multiculturalism, diversity, service, peace, and community involvement.
“It’s our community weekend and this seemed to be a good weekend to reach out to another community—these folks with challenges,” said George School Independent Service Coordinator Bev Trautwein in the article.
All George School students take part in a
service project of at least sixty-five hours during the junior or senior year. Students can choose to devise an
independent project, to engage in
local service with an organization such as the Miracle League or Woods Services in Langhorne, Pennsylvania, or to take part in a school-organized
service trip. All service projects must involve face-to-face interaction with members of an underserved community.
